Amazon Smartphone With Six Cameras And A 3D Screen
Yep. Amazon is making a smartphone, and it's slathered in cameras. But why?
Allegedly genuine pictures of a mysterious Amazon smartphone have cropped up online, and it has a 3D screen along with six cameras - five on the front and one on the back.
This latest leak courtesy of BGR verifies information recently provided to the Wall Street Journal about an Amazon smartphone which has a glasses-free 3D effect display.
Devices like the Nintendo 3DS already use lenticular screens to focus light directly into each eye, but they only work if you're positioned in the sweet spot.
Amazon's smartphone instead uses four front-facing infrared cameras (one in each corner) to track your head, enabling the 'camera angle' of the screen to virtually adjust itself to produce the effect of a 3D view, as demonstrated in the iPad app video above.
There will be various elements of the Amazon smartphone's software which take advantage of the glasses-free 3D effect, including 3D menus and icons.
Interactive3D product images on Amazon's online store could also be another possibility, in addition to a 3D maps application.
In terms of raw specs, the Amazon smartphone has an unnamed Snapdragon processor (likely to be the 800, 801 or 805), along with 2GB of RAM, a 4.7in 720p screen and a 13MP camera. There's also a regular front-facing camera for voice chats and selfies too.
We expect it to run a very heavily modified version of Android similar to the Kindle Fire HDX and Fire TV.
The Amazon smartphone is currently protected by a secure case to hide its design, but if it's put together as well as its Fire HDX tablet counterparts, we'll be happy.
Interestingly, Amazon is reportedly working on two smartphones - the more powerful of which is expected to launch in the US in the summer. The lower cost device (which we assume won't share the power and 3D screen), will then be released at a later time.
That's all the information available for the time being, but we'll be sure to update you with more news as soon as we get it.
