The Android Silver project, which was rumored earlier this month, has today been corroborated by four fresh sources, all of whom point to a major shift in Google's mobile strategy. The Information reports that the current scheme of offering Nexus-branded handsets with Google's unadulterated vision of the best Android user experience will be scrapped, to be replaced by a set of high-end Silver phones that will closely adhere to it. The change is both expansive and expensive, as Google is said to be planning to spend heavily on promoting these devices in wireless carriers' stores and through advertising, essentially subsidizing the development and marketing costs for its hardware partners.

World's First 10Gbps Wi-Fi Technology To Arrive Next Year
11:26 PM | No comments |
The new wireless technology will be capable of delivering speeds of up to 1GBps over the air.
Quantenna Communications has unveiled a new Wi-Fi technology that it's calling "10G Wi-Fi". The new wireless technology will support data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps and a much wider range than the current Wi-Fi technology.
The Wi-Fi technology is likely to be introduced in 2015. Quantenna Communications had announced earlier that it will launch a new chipset next year that will make the "10G Wi-Fi" possible. The company is already known for supplying hardware to companies like AT&T, Belgacom, DIRECTV, France Telecom, Swisscom and Telefonica.
Quantenna also says that ASUS is using Quantenna's 802.11ac chipset to build the world's fastest consumer router. The company also claims to be the first to support MU-MIMO (a technology used to transmit data to multiple devices at once).
“We’ve made 4x4 MU-MIMO a reality, but we can’t stop there,” said Dr. Sam Heidari, CEO, Quantenna Communications. “The demand for reliable, high-performance Wi-Fi will only increase. The number of Wi-Fi enabled devices in the home is growing faster than anyone predicted. Outdoor applications like carrier Wi-Fi, mobile offload and broadband delivery are quickly emerging. Wi-Fi has to keep up. That’s where 10G Wi-Fi comes in. Wi-Fi is no longer a convenience. People expect it to ‘just work’ even with demanding applications like HD video streaming. With Quantenna’s 10G Wi-Fi, they’ll always get the performance they expect—even as their expectations continue to rise.”
The company is planning to incorporate the 4x4 offerings to its next upcoming 10G Wi-Fi chipsets in 2015. These chipsets will also support MIMO configurations of up to 8x8.

Ara Smartphone Coming in January 2015
12:55 AM | No comments |
The first Project Ara device will be a gray phone, designed to be intentionally boring so users will customize it.
Google's Project Ara initiative aims to change the future of smartphones, and it just might, when the first modular device launches in January for $50.
During this week's Project Ara Developers Conference, leader Paul Eremenko announced the "Gray Phone"—an intentionally boring handset expected to be personalized.
"It's called the Gray Phone because it's meant to be drab grey to get people to customize it," Eremenko told the crowd, according to CNET.
Consumers can choose their operating system, phone case, and applications, so why not let them choose the handset's hardware design? That's the question Google tackles with Project Ara, an open hardware platform that relies heavily on miniaturized components and 3D printing.
The Ara group has already partnered with 3D Systems and Phonebloks, and plans to collaborate with more partners, including academic experts at MIT and Carnegie Mellon, CNET said.
Project Ara is housed within Google's Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group, and overseen by Regina Dugan, former director of the U.S. Defense Department's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
The team was unveiled in October and tasked with doing for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem. Initially part of Motorola Mobility, Google retained ATAP when the companies split up in January.
Early this month, Google's team showed off a prototype of the phone's structural frame, highlighting electro-permanent magnets which keep in place components like an application processor, keyboard, extra battery, or pulse oximeter.
But there's still one flaw in the design: the Android operating system does not yet support Ara's dynamic hardware.
"The good news is that we're Google," Eremenko joked during Tuesday's event, adding that necessary drivers will be ready in December, serving as one of the team's last tasks before public release.
And unlike most smartphones, Ara's handset is built to last five or six years—with continuous component updates, of course.
Last week, Google unveiled version 0.10 of its Module Developers Kit for Project Ara, offering mobile developers the bits and pieces needed to create a fully modular smartphone.
Tuesday and Wednesday's event marked the first of three planned developer conferences; the next are set for July and September, though specific dates were not revealed.

Android 4.5 Preview
11:58 AM | No comments |
Google's latest iteration of Android should be its most feature-packed yet. Here's what we think we know so far…
Luckily, Google I/O is set to kick off in late June, and we expect to see the latest and greatest generation of Android take centre stage.
Here's what we think we know so far:
DESSERT MENU
Traditionally, Android versions have been named after deliciously sweet edibles in alphabetical order from gingerbread to ice cream sandwich to the most recent KitKat, and we can't see that trend stopping anytime soon.
The letter 'L' is next on the list, and rumours so far point to everything from Ladoo (a popular ball-shaped Indian sweet) to Lollipop (which should be familiar to most readers).
Given the worldwide spread of Android, we're putting our money down on the latter, but at this stage, nothing's certain. Remember Key Lime Pie?
DESIGN
Google's new Android style is internally referred to as 'Moonshine'
The newer design is much flatter and cleaner, taking a leaf out of iOS 7's design book.
Colourful flat circular icons, coupled with KitKat's existing transparent status bar and navigation buttons provide a much cleaner, less cluttered minimalist look, which we're definitely fans of.
The new icons follow on from the flattening and simplification of Google's online icons, and Android Police has managed to mock up the new 4.5 Hera Gmail interface according to the information it currently has. Pretty, isn't it?
FEATURES
The4.5 update is known internally as Hera. The site is confident that all the information it possesses about Android 4.5 is accurate, although it stresses that things could very well change leading up to the official unveil in June.
Hera is reportedly centred around the unification of Android and Chrome, and features a special Chromium build designed to run on Android.
A big change that Android 4.5 brings to the table is functional multitasking windows, which shows off apps as interactive HTML 5-powered windows that are able to carry out actions as opposed to just being a static list of screenshots of open apps.
That means you could, for example, reply to an email straight from the multitasking window without having to fully enter the main app.
HTML 5 integration could therefore dramatically change the way in which we interact with Android devices, making basic actions far more powerful. The overall aim is to make the transition from Desktop to mobile seamless. Android 4.5 could see you start a task on your laptop, before opening it up on your phone as an interactive card when you're on the go, so you can carry on from where you left off.
Looking up an address on google Maps before dashing out the door could, for example, have Google Maps automatically open on your phone so that you don't have to go digging for the address again.
Sadly we know little else about just how deeply HTML 5 will be integrated into Android, but we're definitely excited to see what Google has in store for us all.
RELEASE DATE
Android 4.5 (which we'll call Lollipop for the time being) is expected to be officially revealed on 25 June at Google I/O.
If Google sticks to tradition, it will launch initially on the Nexus 6, in addition to the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets.
